The surge in mobile gaming in India


The cause of the surge in mobile games in India is lockdown due to the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic. India went into lockdown on 25 March 2020 resulting in a restriction of around 1.3 billion people into their homes. Because of this, nearly 45% of the population started mobile gaming. 



The report mentions that women comprise 43% of the mobile gaming audience in India, of which 12% are between 25-44 and 28% over 45 years. 



India is one of the top five mobile gaming markets worldwide, with a 13% share of global game sessions, and is expecting to add 40 million online gamers during 2020-22. Furthermost, the Indian gaming companies have been rising substantially. Real money gaming (RMG) is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 40% from 2020−22. 



As per SensorTower's data, in 2020 India was in the number one spot of mobile game download making 7.3 billion installs and ranking 17% market share worldwide.






Here are the top 5 games that ruled the screens in 2020 :


  • PUBG mobile

It was the highest-grossing mobile game. Now in India it is banned as it was among the 118 Chinese mobile apps which the government banned over national security reasons in September. But it had made a comeback in June as “Battlegrounds of India” accepting all guidelines given by our government.





  •  Call of duty mobile 

It had made 10 billion dollars in 2020. Reportedly,13.1 million downloads had been done from India, making it second-largest after United States (US).




 

  • Among Us

It had 83.3% million installs worldwide. It is a multiplayer game with teamwork and betrayal.




 

  • Ludo king

According to Inc42, Ludo King is currently the most downloaded mobile game in India with 10.3 million downloads during September 2020. Ludo King crossed 500 million downloads by December 2020.




  • Garena free fire

Free Fire is the fifth most downloaded game in the country.

Recently on 30 July 2021, a 13-year-old boy died of suicide in Madhya Pradesh (MP) Chhatarpur district after losing 40,000 in his game.





 

The bottom line- Surge in mobile games in India has been increasing from 2020 till the date. Hope the reasons are clear.
